The Story

Aman Summer Palace, China - Experience

Once only a whispered secret, Aman Summer Palace rests in the former Qingyi Garden — the Garden of Clear Ripples. A place where emperors once sought solace, today the site hums with the echoes of dynasties past. Its stones trace the footsteps of monarchs; its waters home to fragments of time gone by.

To wander Aman Summer Palace’s grounds is to trace calligraphy across a living parchment. Arched bridges curve like brushstrokes on silk, standalone pavilions (originally used by Empress Dowager Cixi) appear as if to hover between earth and sky and Lotus flowers sway in the breeze, as if bearing the words of long-forgotten poets.

Unveiled as Aman Summer Palace in 2008, and now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the resort offers sanctuary and serenity, not only to imperial royalty, but all those who pass through. Here, among peony-lined courtyards and to a soundtrack of cicada-song, history waits to be rediscovered.

Within the resort’s storied walls, architecture and design reflect deep philosophical tradition. Its courtyards, enclosed by stone walls, are interconnected with water features symbolising the Confucian ideal of harmony between people and nature. Rock formations resemble the mountains, representing the Daoist appreciation for nature’s organic beauty and the hallways that lead from room to room tell stories of a scholarly past.

Landscapes weave a tapestry of ancient Eastern Philosphy, and throughout the year, the topography changes with the seasons. Spring with its delicate blossoms that uplift and inspire, and autumn, as it blankets Longevity Hill in golden Ginkgo leaves, bringing warmth and encouraging contemplation.

Dating back over 300 years, Aman Summer Palace’s connection to its eponymous site extends far beyond its exclusive access via secret door. The resort itself is place in which to witness the concept of time as it passes by and to admire beauty in its natural forms.
